Ku Ku Schafer

Thomas E. "Ku Ku" Schafer, 76, of Oakland Hills, FL, formerly of Syracuse, passed away Monday at his home.

Tom was a longtime resident of Syracuse, moving to Florida in 1985. Tom was employed by the Syracuse Police Department for 20 years, retiring as a sergeant in 1977.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a life member and past commander of Mattydale VFW Post #3146 in Mattydale and a member of American Legion Post #347 in Lady Lake, FL. Tom was a Pop Warner football coach with the Mattydale Vikings for 23 years and was an avid Syracuse University sports fan.

Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Carol; his children, Dale Schafer of Central Square, Gary Schafer of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Donna Archer of Clay, and Kim Ernest and Dawn Ellis, both of Baldwinsville; his former wife, Arlene Schafer of Central Square; a brother, George Schafer of Fayetteville; a sister, Arlene Foster of Rome; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at Mattydale VFW Post #3146, 2000 Lemoyne Ave., corner of Factory Ave. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Florida, 1040 Woodcock Rd., Suite 119, Orlando, FL 32803-3510.
