October 26, 2008 Robert W. Bob Alling, 71, of Syracuse, died Sunday at Rosewood Heights Health Center after a long illness. He was a West Genesee High School graduate and earned his degree in criminal justice from Onondaga Community College and also attended Syracuse University. Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea from 1957 to 1959. He joined the Syracuse Police Dept. in 1963, retiring in 1983. He was awarded many certificates of merit and the Hendrick medal in 1973 by the police dept. and the PBA. Bob owned  the Syracuse PBA and VFW Post 348. Bob was an avid fisherman and hunter, belonging to several rod and gun clubs. He was a country western musician, playing with several bands over the years. Survived by his daughter, Jessica Alling of Syracuse; his stepfather, David Wykle (Kathleen Bertrand-Wykle) of Camillus; one aunt, Emily Lindner; and several cousins. Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m, with a 7 p.m. memorial service at Whelan Bros. Funeral Home, 3700 W. Genesee St. Burial will be private in Rose Cemetery. Whelan Bros.
