Howard E. Bench, 90, of Liverpool, died Monday at Community General Hospital after a brief illness. Howard was born in Syracuse to Grace (Schaefer) and Howard H. Bench, on August 19, 1914. He spent most of his life on the North Side until moving to the Valley in 1967 and Liverpool in 1998. He graduated in the first high school graduation class of Assumption Catholic Academy in 1933. He was predeceased by his son, James Bench. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Catherine (Schloeder) Bench; sons, David (Sherry) Bench of Cary, NC, Ken Bench of Pontoon Beach, IL, Donald (Katy) Bench of Rochester, NY; daughter-in-law, Linda (Proctor) Bench of Liverpool and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Howard retired in August 1976 after 31 years with the Syracuse Police Department. He was a member of the Syracuse Police Benevolent Association, the Syracuse Police Retirees Association and the Pastime Athletic Club. He was a past member of the Anglers Association of Onondaga, the Knights of St. John and the Third Ward Republican Men's Club. In the early 1950's, he led and instructed District 4 Civil Defense Auxiliary Police. Howard enjoyed sports and pitched for the Syracuse Arrows baseball team in the early 1930's. He was an avid bowler and bowled in the Pastime Club House League and the Greater Syracuse League. Funeral services 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Assumption Church. Burial will be in Onondaga Valley Cemetery. Calling hours 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Maurer Funeral Home, 300 Second St., Liverpool.
