John Burns

John J. Burns, 67, of Earl Ave, Mattydale, died Wednesday at home. 

Born in Newark, N.J., he lived in Mattydale since 1964. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired in 1994, after 40 years with the Syracuse Police Department, as deputy chief in charge of the uniform bureau. He was a communicant of St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, Mattydale, and a member of Fraternal Order of Police John C. Dillon Lodge 315, Syracuse Police Benevolent Association, and the Syracuse Police Fraternal and Syracuse Police Retirees associations. 

Survivors: His wife of 47 years, the former Anna Dixon; five daughters, Kathleen Holm of Binghamton, Debra Linnertz of North Syracuse , Karen Knapp of Mattydale, Margaret Ridings of Cazenovia and Eileen Irwin of Cicero; two sons, John J. Jr. of East Syracuse and Daniel of Lubbock, Texas; a sister, Margaret Cilurzo of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; two brothers, Harry and James, both of Syracuse ; 21 grandchildren. 

Services: 9:15 a.m. Saturday at Krueger Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in St. Margaret's Church, Mattydale. Burial, Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Onondaga Hill. Calling hours, 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 2619 Brewerton Road, Mattydale.
