Michael John Czerniel, born June 9, 1920, passed away May 5, 2013 peacefully at home. Michael served in the US Army as a Master Sergeant between 1940-1945, and retired as a sergeant in 1974 from the Syracuse Police Department. He was a communicant of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and enjoyed weekly trips to the race track with his wife and spending time with his family.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sophia D. Czerniel who passed away on March 27, 2013; two daughters, Susan J. Ciabotti in 1998 and Jeanne A. Czerniel in 1999 and great-granddaughter, Faith Auringer.
Michael is survived by three daughters, Michele A. (Dennis) Luciano, Longmeadow, MA, Janet M. (Maurice) Maggiolino, Clay, NY, and Carol A. Auringer, Syracuse, NY. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave., Syracuse. Services will be celebrated on Saturday, May 11 at 9 a.m. at the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home and 9:30 AM at The Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Entombment will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery Resurrection Mausoleum, Dewitt.
