John was one of my mentors when I transferred into CID. He was in that special group of WWII vets who joined the PD right after the war and became civil service detectives. By decree of Chief Patrick Murphy, the rank of Detective was abolished and they were all made Sergeants. Only the best were allowed to continue in CID, and John was one of them. While no passing is without sadness, I was so pleased that John had a long and full retirement. See you on the other side, bro. - Jack Winter, editor
