John Robert Hannon, 94, of Syracuse, died at his home on Friday. Born in Syracuse, John served with the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific Theater including Guadalcanal. He returned home to join the Syracuse Police Department, retiring in 1983 after 32 years of service. He was a flight Instructor and commercial pilot, a member of the P.B.A. retirees and a Communicant of St. Stephen's and the Basilica of Sacred Heart. He was predeceased by his wife, Christina Catherine in 1986.

Surviving are his five daughters, Linda (Richard) Fritz of Niskayuna, Kathleen Sowan of Raleigh, NC, Patricia Ann Hannon of Syracue, Anna Marie Monica of Romeh and Colleen Senke of Syracuse; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial (in Latin) will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Friends may call 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday prior to services at the Giminski-Wysocki Funeral Home, 1320 W. Genesee St., Syracuse. Burial: St. Agnes Cemetery.

John was working traffic when I came on and I used to see him in the coffee shop on the OnBank Building where I worked part time. After he retired, he still came in where the waitress remembered him and still gave him free coffee.
