George Lorenz

One of Syracuse's finest, Retired Detective Sgt. George M. Lorenz, ended his courageous battle against cancer on Jan. 4th. George was born in Boston, Mass. to Marion Moffett on July 16, 1940. He was later adopted by his loving caretaker, Margaret Lorenz. George was predeceased by both of his mothers, his sister Majorie Pederson, his father-in-law George J. Hegney, his first wife Helen "Angel" Lorenz, and most recently his daughter-in-law Cathy (Bill) Lorenz.

George is survived by his wife Phyllis, daughters Cindy (Steve) Stone, Kelley (Todd) Shields, sons Bill Lorenz, and George R. (Carolyn). George was blessed with fifteen grandchildren and great grandchildren who have given him much happiness and love. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Phyllis Hegney, sister-in-law Georgina Hegney (Steve Prievo), many nieces and nephews, and cousins.

During his career with the Syracuse Police, George served in many divisions of the Department. At retirement he was the Executive Officer of the Criminal Investigations Laboratory. He received many commendations and awards during his years with the department. In 1981 he was awarded the Mayor's Merit and Valor Award, the Valley American Legion Post 1468 Police Officer of the Year award in 1993, Valley Mens' Club Man of the Year Award in 1985, the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award and the 1983 Valley Mens' Club Past President's Award. 

George was also a member of the PBA Golf League for many years and shot a hole in one in 2011. He was also a member of the Payne Lake Rod and Gun Club where he enjoyed many, many special times with Bill Macko, friends and family members. George also volunteered at Meachem Elementary School. As a member of the Valley Mens' Club he managed the French Fry Tent at the Valley Field Days for many years. This was a special time for him each July as he and his faithful crew worked together. George had to pass this assignment on to his great friend Peter Payne as he was not well enough this season to work at the field. Many special relationships and memories were made through this wonderful organization.

George has been a member of the Elks for many year and proudly served as Past District Deputy -Grand Exalted Ruler- Past State Vice President and State Trustee for Syracuse Lodge 31. He was also a long time member of the Police Benevolent Assn., and the Fraternal Order of Police, and Sons of the American Legion, and the Pirate's Cove Yacht Club.

Calling hours will be held at Butler-Badman Funeral Home, Inc., 4504 W. Seneca Tnpk., Syracuse, NY on Sunday Jan. 8th from 1 to 5 PM. Elks Service will take place at 4:30 P.M. There will be a reception hosted by at the Valley American Legion/Valley Mens' Club at Valley Post 1468, following the calling hours.
