Mike Shevchuk

Michal Shevchuk, 80, of Syracuse, passed away Saturday September 27, 2014 at Upstate University Hospital. Mr. Shevchuk was born in the city of Wierchomla, in the region of Lemkivshchyna, Ukraine and has lived in Central NY for over 65 years. He retired from the Syracuse Police Department in 1997 after 33 years of service. He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, a member of the Syracuse Ukrainian National Home, a member of the Syracuse PBA, and a US Army Veteran. Michal was an outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish, enjoyed camping, volunteering at the Ukrainian Youth Camp at "Kholodnij Yar" and spending time with loving family and friends.

Survivors: his wife of 54 years, Irene; four daughters, Odarka, Natalie (Andy), Agneta (Christopher) and Patricia (Alex); one son, Michael (Shael); ten grandchildren; Kasha, Tanya (Patrick), Peter, Jessica, Justin, Alex, Marlena, Karina, Dante and Eden; two great-grandchildren; Halyna and Dalilah; a sister-in-law, Gullan Shevchuk; a niece, Agneta; and a nephew, Mark.

Services: Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. from the Macko-Vassallo Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church. Michal will be laid to rest in the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home 1609 West Genesee St. The Panakhyda Services will be held at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
