IS THERE LIFE AFTER BADGE?

Retired Badge on a Chest of Wood Maybe, but the quality of that life depends on you, because time moves on, even if you don't.

A scientist explained that time comes at us from the invisible future. It becomes visible in the present. The present reveals and embodies the future moment by moment.  Time only interacts with humanity in the present. Then it disappears into the invisible past. We cannot see the past, but it helps us to understand the present and it casts light on the future which we hope to see.

The Bible just says: Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. The wind blows, and we are gone-- as though we had never been here. Ps 103 - NLB

"If you want to enjoy your retirement,
you have to understand this basic truth."

Well friend, if you signed those retirement papers, your police flower just died, and that wind the Bible talked about  IS coming. When you become an ex-policeman**, you will experience a shock, like a bath in cold water. All the power and respect that you came to think of as your own disappears like a puff of smoke in a strong breeze.

Your memories are fresh, most of your cop buddies are still active, but your relationships with the active cops change.

You are an outsider now. As the years pass, your friends retire and die off.  Young cops mature and even to a Captain like me, it seems they all go farther than you did. -- At the station house, they speak your name no more.

If you are to survive and enjoy your retirement, you have to understand this basic truth.
A retired cop is NOT some variety of cop

A former cop is no more a cop than a turd is a former T-bone steak. The change is that profound, but you don't have to become a turd, you can become a brand new man.**

What you have to do is realize it's over, and you have to get over it. Create the new you. Forget the past and its battles, glories won and pain suffered. They are gone forever. Strive for future prizes, especially your relationships. Love your family, be a blessing to your friends, honor your God, and  life will be new and fresh every day. If you live in the past, you're already dead.  You just don't know it.

Captain Jack Winter , 021 Ret.

** Sorry ladies, I have no idea what it's like for you.  My suspicion is that it is the natural inclination of women to give the relationship component of their lives it's proper import. Therefore, they will have an easier time giving up the police persona.  This is a corollary of the natural law, For women to succeed, they must be smarter and work harder than men; fortunately this is not difficult!
